Joshua Mallonee Panama Medical Costs Support

Joshua is asking for your help:

Last month, I was assaulted by a man in Bocas del Toro, Panama as I was closing my store. I am an artist and small business owner. I feel grateful for the freedom and fun of running a shop and making clothes as I’ve been slowly growing my business. The man took a few items and, as I followed him out, he punched me in the jaw. I fell backwards and my head hit the concrete floor. My neighbor in the shop next door heard my head hit the floor and saw him run out of the shop. I was taken to the emergency room and gained consciousness as the doctors were beginning treatment. I suffered a moderate yet significant concussion and a broken jaw.

The concussion and brain swelling were of primary concern. I flew to Panama City for scans and treatment from specialists. Thankfully, following the appointments with specialists, brain scans, drainage, and medications, the symptoms of the concussion began to subside after a few weeks. As my concussion symptoms settled, we turned toward my jaw, which involved bone grafting and implants.

Unfortunately, some of the bone grafts are not revascularizing. The host-graft union was unsuccessful, new bone is not forming and is currently infected. Obviously, less than ideal. Additional surgeries and another trip to Panama City are required to address this complication.

I'm currently uninsured, but extremely grateful the cost of medical care is relatively inexpensive in Panama. To date, the cost of treatment has been over $10K. I also have experienced almost 2 months of being unable to work. I now need to take additional time off for the next procedures.

Between my generous mother and myself, we've been able to stretch significantly and cover the costs to date. Moving forward, it looks like an additional $8K is needed for the next round of oral surgeries and housing in Panama City for the duration of the procedures. This will require me to take even more time away from the store. Spring is the 'high' season in Bocas - and for my shop. Saying it’s not been easy is an understatement.

Any support is greatly appreciated. I really appreciate your kindness and your generosity, if you are able to help.
