JourneyforJudy: Honouring granny, fighting Alzheimers

Who?

My grandmother, Judy Kinderlerer, was diagnosed with dementia at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant we didn't get to see much of her during the early stages. When we did reunite, it was evident that she wasn't quite the same vibrant person I remembered; dementia had taken away some of her sparkle. This gradual decline continued until March of this year, when she sadly passed away.

Judy was a truly remarkable woman – mischievous, funny, smart, interesting, and undeniably cool (she famously rode a motorbike in her youth). She was not only a fantastic grandmother but also someone who actively encouraged my adventurous spirit, even if it led to some mischievous schemes. Her spirit and influence have stayed with me, guiding my choices and inspiring me to embark on new adventures.

Why cycle? What's the connection?

I often asked Judy whether I should get a motorbike ,she had a Lambretta in her youth, and each time she adamantly said no. So, in her honor, I've decided on the next best thing – cycling. Interestingly, she would often offer to buy me a bike, and I believe if she were here today, she would likely have supported this endeavor wholeheartedly, possibly even financing the bike and all the necessary gear because thats the loving grandma she was.

What's the plan?

I'm planning to cycle from John o' Groats, Scotland, to Land's End, Cornwall. The loose route will take me down the east coast, passing through Edinburgh, down to Sheffield, across to Bristol, and finally, the home stretch down to Land's End.

How far and how long?

While the exact distance isn't confirmed, I estimate it to be just over 1000 miles. I aim to complete the journey in approximately three weeks, carrying all the necessary gear for an unaided ride.

When?

I'm aiming to set off from John o' Groats on the 3rd of July. The end date will be whenever I reach Land's End.

I would be incredibly grateful if you would consider sponsoring me on this journey to raise funds for Alzheimer's Research UK. Your support will not only honor the memory of my beloved grandmother but also contribute to research that could help prolong the time others get to spend with their loved ones.
