Nauru Refugee Support: Fundraiser for Pregnant Mum
Donation protected
After years stranded on Nauru, Mona has been building a new life for herself in the United States.
It hasn't been easy, but before the COVID-19 crisis hit she had found a job, improved her English, built up a network of friends and gotten married -- she was looking forward to having her first-ever child in June.
But now her new life has been thrown into chaos, losing her job with the couple unsure where their next pay-check is coming from -- or when. As a non-citizen, access to support services can be a challenge.
The Australian-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this emergency fundraiser and linked it directly to Mona's account. Please chip in to help out with baby supplies, medical checks and the necessities she needs >>
Several years ago, Mona fled targeted violence in her home country. Days before she made it to Australia, the government instituted a sudden change to the refugee policy, meaning she was sent to offshore immigration detention rather than resettled, like those who arrived just days earlier.
Mona spent five years stranded on Nauru in conditions condemned by the UN and Amnesty International before being resettled in North Carolina.
"When I first arrived in the USA I was alone, malnourished, and afraid," Mona told us. When she first contacted the Ads-Up Refugee Network, she was struggling to adjust, and we managed to link her with some local ex-pat Aussies as she worked to build a new life. Mona has said she was happier than ever. "I have been working hard to improve my English, I am in a circle of people who truly care for my well-being and I had a job."
With a child on the way, we're worried that economic and health pressures could destabilize the success Mona has had since gaining freedom from Nauru. If you can, please chip in now to help give her a fair go >>
Even though times are tough right now, Mona told us that she remains hopeful. "I am grateful for this opportunity and determined to stay strong during this difficult time," she said. "Any support I get right now is a blessing.
