We Need Heroes

Donation protected
We are the cast of 'Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens' - almost a year ago, the show ran at the Union Theatre, London.

The show tells the stories of people who died during the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the 80's through a series of monologues and songs. 'Heroes' is about the people who helped in whatever way they could in a time of great need, a message which resounds particularly strongly today.

Within the space of a few hours mid-March, the entire theatre industry in the UK was shut down in one of the first steps towards enforcing social distancing. Thousands of performers, creatives, and crew members were put out of jobs almost instantly, with no guarantee on when they would be able to return.

In response to the industry's shutdown, many performers turned to creating content online, from live-streamed concerts to teaching students. As a cast, we wanted to create something together that could be used to raise funds for people who are finding this time particularly difficult.

All of the funds raised will be split evenly between NHS Charities Together, and Funds for Freelancers.

NHS Charities Together is providing relief for NHS workers that regular funding doesn't cover; this includes providing comfortable spaces so NHS staff and volunteers can have breaks, providing electronic tablets to patients, staff and volunteers so they can stay in contact with their loved ones, and offering counselling support to protect mental health, and help staff and volunteers process the issues they are facing in COVID-19.

Funds for Freelancers is a charity initiative set up by the Turbine Theatre, London (lead by Paul Taylor-Mills, Helen Clarkson, Sasha Regan, and Sita McIntosh). It was created in the wake of the theatre closures mid-March to help as many people in the theatre industry as possible.

Both of these charities are doing all they can to help those who are struggling with the rapidly changing landscape of society, whether that's the sudden realisation that they're out of a job and unable to pay their rent, or the unimaginable difficulty of being a frontline NHS worker.

Times are uncertain at the moment for everyone, but any donation you're able to give will go a long way to easing the stress faced by performers and NHS workers and volunteers alike.

Thank you!
