Cyclone Freddy Appeal

Update:

With your support so far, we have been able to provide school kits for over a thousand children in the two communities so classes can resume. Each school kit comprises a school bag, pencils, pens, a rubber, a sharpener, a ruler and exercise books.

But the roofs of the school classrooms have been swept away and we now urgently need to provide roofing for the schools. The teachers’ houses have also collapsed and need to be replaced. Other urgent priorities include: seeds to grow food for consumption (beans, corn, sweet potatoes) and agricultural implements to replace those that were lost in the storm.

Your support will enable us to keep children in school and help families to put food on the table to feed their children.

The Zalala Foundation is appealing for your support in response to one of the longest and most powerful tropical storms ever recorded. Villages were ravaged as the cyclone swept across the coast of Mozambique last week.

Two villages that we have been working with for years - Supinho and Idugo, have been severely affected. Thousands of houses have collapsed leaving families, including children and the elderly, without shelter. Many are facing hunger and illness as fields and crops have been swamped. Schools in both communities have been damaged, and the health centre in Idugo is without light and water. The roads are also flooded making access to essential services almost impossible.

Cholera Outbreak:

The lack of water has led to a serious cholera outbreak and there are fears of an increase in cases of other waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and malaria, with young children at greatest risk. The farms have been swamped and most people are living on potatoes. Clothes are sodden. There is no way to access medical help and people are desperate. Read more here.

Any donation you are able to provide, however small, will be used to address some of the immediate needs of these communities, including clothes, food supplies, and school repairs to enable children to return to school.

Thank you for your support.
