A True Tragedy - Juan Sena's ALS Treatment
Donation protected
We recently learned the devastating news that dear friend Juan Sena contracted the vicious and debilitating disease ALS. A generous and thoughtful, "good soul", Juan has devoted his life to chess, teaching and coaching children, helping them develop their game and improve their mental acuity, building a community out of a shared passion.
Juan's diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is about as heartbreaking as it gets. A progressive disease that has already begun to limit him physically and, in addition to the pain and suffering, he is about to incur incredibly significant medical expenses. Chess NYC has embraced him and is providing him physical staff support so that he may continue his love and continue teaching young players, we'll help for as long as he can but the time is rapidly approaching where that work will become impossible.
ALS causes painful muscular spasticity, which interferes with basic motor functions, limiting mobility and speech. While there is no cure for ALS, the disease's progress can be slowed down with VERY expensive medication and equipment. The diagnosis, however, brings with it more financial stress than just the cost of medication, as other medical and non-medical expenses, as well as the loss of income, must be considered.
His friends and colleagues at Chess NYC wish to help a man who has always been devoted to helping others, and we are reaching out in the hope of finding other well-wishers. Please help Juan fight this difficult disease, help him continue his positive work for as long as possible, and help him afford all that is available to him to mitigate the increasing and imminent pain and suffering that this disease brings.
Please help, to the extent possible...F-A-S-T. Please share with your community.
On behalf of Juan and his family...Thank you.
