THE WEIGH-IN
Juan is an inspirational and brave 22-year old warrior and University of Florida student that is battling a fight few have endured at such a young age. Young men at this age are typically enjoying and making the most of their youth and new experiences in life. Juan has been dealt another set of cards with which he has faced head-on with tremendous courage. He is undefeated and in his own words says, "My Body and Mind are Invincible".
ROUND 1
In April of 2017, at the young age of 20, Juan experienced severe blood in his cough and pressure in his chest. After several medical tests doctors diagnosed an advanced Germ Cell Tumor Cancer located across his chest putting pressure on his heart and lungs. The mass was large with a size of 19 cm in diameter. This type of cancer starts in the embryonic stages of life and develops throughout the lifespan of an individual. It typically begins its effect on the body in a person's 20s. It is extremely rare and non-traditional to other cancer forms. With this news, Juan never lost hope and faithfully decided to battle on through treatment. After multiple rounds of chemo, open chest surgery, and additional chemo after surgery; doctors were able to get his tumor under control and clear of his body. Round 1 was over and Juan went back to his corner free to continue his normal life with family and friends.
ROUND 2
In November 2017, his tumor had come back on the lower part of his right lung. This mass was significantly smaller than the first instance and treatment was swifter. Doctors were able to treat the mass through surgical removal of a section of his right lung which contained the mass. His lung was smaller afterwards, but his heart and determination were stronger. Round 2 was over and yet again Juan returned to his corner with his eyes set on returning to school to complete his degree in Architecture.
ROUND 3
Juan being the brave and strong person he is, decided to go back to his studies. He had a quality semester but unfortunately when he came home this past winter break, he experienced very severe back pain. After multiple tests done, doctors found another tumor, this time by his upper left lung, which had grown extremely quick in the span of 3 months. He was admitted to the Emergency Room in Tampa General Hospital from once again coughing up a significant amount of blood. The pressure of the large mass was causing uncontrollable bleeding. The situation turned critical in less than 24 hours as Juan was placed in the ICU with a breathing tube after 4 bronchoscopies were performed to ensure bleeding could be controlled. Due to the rapid ongoing growth of the mass, Juan needed to receive emergency chemo under sedation. He remained in the hospital for three weeks to complete the chemo round and monitor his progress.
THE KNOCKOUT PUNCH
Doctors say this is a very peculiar case that has proven difficult to treat with traditional chemotherapy and say the only remaining treatment is a Stem Cell Transplant.
His oncologist in Tampa has referred him to a center of excellence at the University of Indiana where the pioneer and world-renowned specialist on this type of cancer, Dr. Lawrence Einhorn, will be able to see him and recommend the type of Stem Cell transplant necessary for him. Dr. Einhorn has also treated high-profile testicular cancer cases such as Lance Armstrong.
This process requires Juan, his mother, and his sister to fly to Indiana while his father stays home in order to work. Juan is ready with his gloves on to undergo this medical procedure to deliver THE KNOCKOUT PUNCH and have this condition throw in the towel once and for all.
JOIN HIS TEAM
The Stem Cell Transplant is a very long and enduring process which could take an estimated 2 months to complete. There are heavy costs for this type of treatment including costs of travel, lodging, prescriptions (not all are covered by insurance), insurance, transportation, and post-treatment/recovery costs. This third recurrence of the cancer was unplanned and poses an immense health risk as well as a large financial responsibility for his family.
We would like to kindly ask for Juan to be in all your prayers and if there's anything that you can contribute to Juan's path towards Stem Cell Transplant it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount you are comfortable with, big or small, will make a difference.
Juan would like to thank his team of family, friends, doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and those outside the direct line of treatment for their endless care.
We pray that Juan recovers soon and can go back to the life that God is preparing him for! Thank you for your kindness, generosity and thoughtful prayers. God Bless!
As his sister (Laura Patino) I will be withdrawing the money to my personal account and send it on to my dad (Fabio Patino) who has been handling the expenses of Juan's care.
