Jude Monye is a member of the Lawrence, Kansas community who needs our help. Originally from Nigeria, he won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay for Nigeria in the 2000 Olympics. Originally the silver medalists, he and his relay-mates had to wait 13 years to receive their medals, which they won after the US team was disqualified in 2008.
Jude plays soccer with us in the Lawrence Adult Soccer League (LASL) in Lawrence, KS. Unfortunately Jude recently suffered a freak, but severe injury during a match. After a tackle and unusual fall, he suffered a spiral fracture of the tibia and two dislocated knees (patella and ACL injuries). He was transported directly from the field to Lawrence Memorial and after various surgeries is now immobile for at least 6 weeks, unable to bend his legs and in severe pain. Drugs are helping with the pain but, although LASL has insurance to cover up to $25,000 of his medical expenses, this will not come close to covering the mounting surgery and medical bills that are currently estimated at about $75,000.
We have heard from many people within the LASL community with offers of logistical and emotional support. Unfortunately Jude has no primary insurance and runs the risk of being financially devastated by what has happened. This highlights the plight of those in this country who do not have primary insurance. His need is critical and immediate, as he begins to pay off incoming bills.
We are hoping that the soccer community will be willing to help out a fellow player in need and donate to this campaign on his behalf.
We wish Jude a speedy recovery
