In Memory of Judy Lynne
Donation protected
Judy Morrigan Lynne was a mother, grandmother, political and community activist, and loving friend to many.
A passionately political and social person, Judy was active in many communities over the years, joining and forming organizations and community groups wherever she lived, from Toronto to Ottawa, Vancouver to Gibsons. Some of these include Carlton House Women’s Shelter and Upstream Feminist Publishing in Ottawa, WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre, CUPE City of Vancouver employees’ union, Acting Up feminist theatre group, Menopausal Old Bitches (MOB) social group, and Compassionate Friends in Vancouver, and the Sunshine Coast Film Society, Threshold Singers, and many more on the Sunshine Coast of BC. A passionate and committed activist for justice and equality, Judy spearheaded the initiative to secure same sex benefits for City of Vancouver employees, the first such policy in Canada, in 1986.
Judy died with medical assistance on January 2, 2020, after two years with ovarian cancer. Having chosen a green burial, Judy is interred at Yates Funeral Home on Vancouver Island, with no gravestone or other marker.
Judy discussed with her family what she would like as a marker in memory of her. She expressed a wish that a memorial bench with a commemorative plaque be installed on the Sunshine Coast, where she lived for the last 15 years of her life.
The township of Gibsons provides a bench, memorial plaque, installation, and 10 years maintenance for a flat rate of $2800. This would give weary wanderers a place to sit, somewhere in the splendour of the Sunshine Coast, and would give Judy's loved ones a place to sit and reflect on their memories of Judy and her love of nature, the Coast, and of sitting.
Any additional funds raised will be put into the Neil Falkner Outward Bound Scholarship Fund, which annually sends youth on life-changing Outward Bound wilderness adventures. Judy started this in memory of her son Neil, and championed this cause until her death.
Judy's memorial will be held at Roberts Creek Hall on Sunday, January 26th, 1-4pm.
