The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Georgia State Trooper Jacob Gordon Thompson, age 27, on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Julian Lewis, 60, from a single-gun shot to the face on a rural dirt road in Screven County.

"I want justice for Julian. He was too good to die as he did. This is one step towards justice," said his widow Betty Lewis responding to the arrest.

"The unprecedented pace of the investigation is a direct result of years of activism on these issues along with a sea-change in law enforcement leadership at the top of the GBI. This was not business as usual. The GBI and now the FBI who have launched a separate civil rights investigation have done what was right at this stage. I rarely get to say that," said Statesboro Civil Rights Attorney Francys Johnson.

Thompson w booked into the Screven County Jail. The investigation supports the charges and is active and ongoing. Thompson has been terminated from the Department of Public Safety, Georgia State Patrol.

The Georgia NAACP led JUSTGeorgia Coalition along with the New Georgia Project, Black Voters Matter, and Screven Forward have spearheaded efforts at criminal justice reform.

The Lewis family is represented by noted Civil Rights Attorneys Francys Johnson, of Statesboro, and Mawuli Davis of Bozeman and Davis Law, of Decatur.
