Julie Barrett's Cancer Expenses
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Laura Deyo (formerly Bucklin). As many of you may know, my mom, Julie Barrett, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, cholangiocarcinoma. This effects her bile duct and how her liver can function properly. Ironically, it's the same cancer my father passed away from in 2015, so we were shocked when we heard the diagnosis. She will be having a port placed next week and will start chemo in hopes that we can have more precious time with her. She is currently meeting with doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to discuss clinical trials in addition to her chemo at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Along with this has come many expenses that are piling up such as: hospital bills, co-pays, gas, hotels, etc. I wanted to start this campaign to see if we could take some of that financial burden off of her and her husband Alan's shoulders, so they can focus on each other and family.
For those who don't know my mom, she's a literal angel. There is no bad bone in this woman's body. And she's fucking hilarious, so EVERYONE loves to be around her. When you think of "healthcare heroes," many think of ICU nurses or those fighting COVID, which is fine and dandy... but I think of Jules. She's dedicated 42 years of her life on the adult psych units at University of Iowa. Talk about being patient... One of her colleagues told me once that, "she's the best psych nurse I've ever met, she's literally saved thousands of people from committing suicide." What a huge accomplishment. This area of medicine is often overlooked, underfunded, and may I mention extremely tough emotionally, but she still shows up every day to help those in need. I'm hoping her friends and families can do the same for her, at this time.
If we have extra money left over after all this, it will be donated to the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health in Cedar Rapids, IA in honor of my mom.
Thank you so much for keeping our family in your prayers and thoughts. We need it. And thank you to anyone who helps donate.
