Julius’s Road to a Long Recovery

Hi there I am Julius’s mom. Julius is a smart, sweet and very active 14 year old who lives eats breathes baseball. On 3/25/2023 he and his team were warming up for their game. While his teammate was at the plate, Julius was in the batter circle…the teammate swung the bat and let go of it. The bat flew 10 ft striking Julius in the face. Julius had his helmet on which has a pitch shield but that didn’t stop the wooden bat from striking him. He immediately dropped to the ground. We rushed Julius to Grossmont Hospital and they immediately transferred him to Radys Childrens Hospital trauma unit where he needed emergency plastic surgery. It took 38 stitches to sow his lip back together and it cut all the way up past his gut line, he had 3 permanent teeth knocked out and a 4th broken, and he has a facial fracture that will require surgery very soon. The coach was able to find 2 of the teeth and brought them to the hospital where the dentist trauma team attempted to put them back in in hopes they will fuse to the bone. Because it took us many hours to recover the teeth we are told chances aren’t great for this to happen but they wanted to try. Whether this works or doesn’t he needs three emergency root canals, posts and crowns and the repair and crown of the broken tooth as well. This will only be a temporary fix as the dentist informed us he will need dental implants when he is 18. The league has insurance thankfully as does Julius however our insurance has exhausted ALL resources to get him in for the emergency treatment he needs in the time he needs to have it done by before those roots die and can’t be salvaged even for the time being. My husband and I will be missing work to assist him in his recovery from the incident and the procedures to follow. We are grateful for all the texts, calls and prayers and any donations that are able to assist us through this time. He has a long road ahead but he is a tough kid and I prayer when he is healed he gets back out on the ball field. That’s his favorite place to be. We will also be looking to get some protective equipment for when he able to return to prevent reinjury. Thank you all in advance
