Junipero Serra: Statue of Limitations

America, in the midst of its other challenges, is having a renewed discussion on its complicated history on race.  And because we live in a time when important discussions tend to happen with sound bites of people, we seem to be talking past each other rather than with each other more than ever. As this discussion on racial legacy has expanded to involve the legacy of Father Junipero Serra in California, unfortunately the discussion has taken a similar tenor.

To that end, Paulist Productions is in the midst of developing a new documentary project entitled Junipero Serra: Statue of Limitations. This film project will address the question: should the statues of Junipero Serra come down? In doing so, we seek to create a conversion between both Catholic and secular representatives on the different sides of the issue in the hopes of creating an increased understanding for all sides and in the process... help move along necessary reconciliation.
