Justice for Alberto Rodriguez 12.13.1995 - 10.01.2024

On 10/01/2024, our beloved friend and former baseball player, Alberto Rodriguez (12.13.1995 - 10.01.2024), was wrongfully killed during an encounter with the Highlands Sheriff’s Department at a group home in Sebring, Florida. We did what many families would do in a time of crisis—we sent Alberto to a group home to get the help he needed. Instead of helping him, the system failed us, and now we have to say goodbye to someone who should still be here with us today.

Alberto was killed during a time of crisis; he was put in a group home to be helped. A group home is supposed to provide support and care for individuals in need. The law should be trained on how to encounter these types of behaviors from patients. We are demanding justice and transparency. We want to see the footage from the cameras and understand how this tragic event occurred. If we had known this would happen, we would have left him home free. We are grateful to the group home, as they did all they could to help us, but the authorities failed us all.

Today, it’s Alberto, but tomorrow it could be another Black man wrongfully killed by the police.

We are setting up this GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and send Alberto back home to his mother, who lives in the Dominican Republic. She saw her son just a little over 6 months ago, after waiting more than 7 years without seeing him. It is her deepest wish to be able to lay her son to rest near her. He also left behind his two daughters, who now face a future without their father.

Alberto was a kind, caring person who touched the lives of many through his time in baseball and his personal life. His life was cut short unjustly, and we want to ensure that his story is heard and justice is served.
