On October 1, 2024, our beloved friend and former baseball player, Alberto Rodriguez, was tragically and unjustly killed during an encounter with the Highlands Sheriff’s Department at a group home in Sebring, Florida. In a moment of crisis, we made the difficult decision to send Alberto to a group home to receive the help he needed. Unfortunately, instead of the support he deserved, the system failed him, and we now must say goodbye to someone who should still be with us today.

Alberto was in a vulnerable state when he entered the group home, which is intended to provide care and support for individuals in need. It is crucial for law enforcement to be trained in how to handle such situations compassionately and effectively. We are demanding justice and transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. We request access to any available footage to understand how this tragic event unfolded. Had we known this outcome was possible, we would have chosen differently.

Today, it is Alberto; tomorrow, it could be another Black man wrongfully killed by the police.

We are establishing a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and facilitate Alberto’s return to his mother, who resides in the Dominican Republic. She was able to see her son just six months ago after waiting over seven years. It is her heartfelt wish to lay him to rest near her. Additionally, Alberto leaves behind two daughters who now face a future without their father.

Alberto was a kind and caring individual who touched the lives of many through his baseball career and personal interactions. His life was cut short unjustly, and we are committed to ensuring that his story is heard and that justice is served.

El 1 de octubre de 2024, nuestro querido amigo y exjugador de béisbol, Alberto Rodríguez, fue trágicamente asesinado de manera injusta durante un encuentro con el Departamento del Sheriff de Highlands en un hogar grupal en Sebring, Florida. En un momento de crisis, tomamos la difícil decisión de enviar a Alberto a un hogar grupal para recibir la ayuda que necesitaba. Desafortunadamente, en lugar del apoyo que merecía, el sistema le falló, y ahora debemos despedirnos de alguien que debería seguir con nosotros hoy.

Alberto estaba en un estado vulnerable cuando ingresó al hogar grupal, el cual está destinado a proporcionar cuidado y apoyo a personas que lo necesitan. Es crucial que las fuerzas del orden estén capacitadas para manejar estas situaciones con compasión y eficacia.
