Justice for Amina McCaskill

Donation protected
On the night of November 4th 2020, 646 protestors exercised their first amendment right to peacefully assemble and protest on I-94. They were not given the option to disperse before being trapped in by heavily armed law enforcement and told they were all under arrest. Under the refusal to disperse laws (Minn. Stat. 609.705. 609.71. 609.715) police must give a clear disperse order with a time frame as well as a clear exit path. They were given neither.

After five hours outside on the highway with no food, water, or access to bathrooms, all were arrested and cited, but Amina McCaskill was charged with a felony and held in Hennepin County custody for flashing a laser light at a police. No harm was done to any officer, as he was wearing protective gear. The officer is alive and well, but Amina’s future is now in jeopardy. Police failed to uphold protestors’ rights and failed to follow refusal to disperse laws. And Amina is being unfairly targeted so police can make a point.

As an African American woman, Amina needs our help to keep from falling victim to these outrageous charges from a racist system. In our fight to have Amina’s charges dropped, she will need funds to hire and pay an attorney. Additionally, Amina was detained for two days in Hennepin County Jail and was exposed to the Coronavirus. Because of this, she had to quarantine, which made it that much more difficult for her to maintain the income she so desperately needs to afford an attorney.

Amina was on the highway that night to demand police accountability for violence against black and brown bodies. Amina wants to see an end to racism in policing and was there on behalf of others who were treated unjustly, and has now become a victim of the very thing she was protesting. Please help her. She, along with the other protestors, wanted to disperse, they wanted to leave and were not allowed to. The charges against this 19 year old woman with no priors are absurd. Help Amina get the legal help necessary to fight these unjust and unreasonable charges.

Thank you so much for considering!
