Justice for Christian Griggs
Donation protected
On October 12, 2013 my lifelong friend Christian Griggs was gunned down by his white father-in-law, and local officials failed to conduct a proper investigation, bring any charges, or obtain justice for Christian and his family.
Christian had gone to pickup his daughter Jaden, as planned, to meet her great-grandmother for the first time. Christian called his father stating that his father-in-law, Pastor Pat Chisenhall, was using profanity and not allowing Christian to see his daughter, to which his dad replied, “I’m on the way.”
Tony Griggs arrived at the Chisenhall residence to find his 23-year-old son lying face down on the front porch, having been shot 6 times - once in the stomach, once in the shoulder, and four times in the back from an upward trajectory - suggesting Christian was bent parallel to the ground or lying down when he was hit.
If there was video footage from the day Christian was killed, you would see the crime scene being altered and staged.
Pat Chisenhall claimed self-defense under the Castle Doctrine, but in 2018 a civil jury returned a unanimous verdict that Christian’s death was not in fact self-defense, and that Pat Chisenhall was guilty for the wrongful death of his son-in-law. This is the first time in North Carolina history that the Castle Doctrine was not deemed justified via a jury trial.
Due to a loophole in North Carolina law, only the Sheriff and the District Attorney have the ability to bring charges against Pat Chisenhall, which they have failed to do.
Christian was a remarkable father, son, brother, and friend. He was a veteran who served our country honorably in Iraq, and he should be alive today.
NC officials have the power and responsibility to bring transparency, accountability, and justice. A justice system operating on the toxic combination of racism and good old boy networks will not be tolerated.
We are urging Governor Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to intervene. We are calling for the SBI to conduct an investigation of Christian's murder and the mishandling of the crime scene and investigation thereafter.
