Justice For Dwan White Owl

It is with great sadness that we must share the unexpected passing of Dwan White Owl on Monday, June 12, 2023. She was a daughter, sister, friend, and mother to Danita Warpaint and Jade Defreece.

She passed while in custody at the Red Lake Jail to negligence in the arms of her daughter Danitra. Our family is asking for justice for the inhumane treatment she received while in the care of the Red Lake Tribal Jail. We intend to hire an attorney to hold the Red Lake Jail accountable for failing to exercise reasonable care and for staff negligence in providing medical care to injured or ill inmates.

The family plans to have a traditional burial service on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota and the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation but cannot do this until Dwan's body is released. Because the incident that led to her death happened while she was in the custody of Red Lake, the federal government has jurisdiction over the investigation.
