Our son, Enzo M. Guimaraes, is just 13 years old. He’s kind, intelligent, and has always tried to stand up for himself — even in the face of cruelty. On April 8th, 2025, Enzo was the victim of a violent and hate-motivated assault inside his middle school classroom in Frederick County, Virginia.

The attack was not only physical — it was deeply personal and degrading. Another student brought a dog treat to school, called Enzo a “dog,” and made horrific, racially charged sexual remarks about our family. When Enzo stood up to defend himself, he was brutally punched in the face and head. As a result, he was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, a form of facial paralysis due to nerve trauma.

Even more devastating than the assault itself was how the school failed him:

• We were never notified of the incident when it happened;

• The school refused to provide access to security footage;

• The School Resource Officer blamed our son and intimidated him;

• And the aggressor was given only a one-week lunch detention.

Enzo is a child with a 504 Plan, battling depression and suicidal thoughts — all linked to the relentless bullying he has endured in school for months. His psychiatrist has confirmed that the school environment is the sole cause of his mental health crisis.

Now, we are left fighting alone — for justice, for accountability, and for the safety of our child.
