Justice for Florence Habros

Florence Habros, a now homeless resident of Nome, Alaska, has been an advocate for survivors of domestic violence through her work at the women’s shelter, as well as for children through her work at the children’s home and Child Advocacy Center. Fifteen years ago this fall, Florence was a key witness in the Sonya Ivanoff case—where a young, Native woman was shot and killed by a Nome Police Officer. She spoke out then, after seeing Sonya get into the police car. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/local/from-2003-nome-police-must-work-to-regain-trust-after-officer-charged-with-murder/ar-BBMlWmR
She was scared then, and she is scared to speak out now.
More recently, Florence was assaulted by an on-duty Community Service Officer while he was working for the police department in February of this year. Florence knows she was not the only Native person to be assaulted by the same officer, and hopes that others speak out. The offender pled guilty to Assault in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor, in July, but did not receive jail time or community service and his conviction is likely to be set aside one year from his conviction. http://www.knom.org/wp/blog/2018/07/17/nome-community-service-officer-pleads-guilty-to-on-duty-assault/
Florence was not notified of the court date, and did not get a chance to speak at the hearing. Within a month-and-a-half after being convicted of assault, the City of Nome and Nome Police Department rehired the offender as a Dispatcher, a job where he will have direct contact with community members calling to report crimes, or who stop into the station for information. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/crime-courts/2018/08/23/he-admitted-to-punching-a-homeless-woman-while-on-duty-the-nome-police-department-hired-him-back

Florence has survived as a homeless resident for several years- but now with her offender back at the police station, living without shelter is absolutely unsafe and not an option. She has only had housing for the last week, and is currently residing in temporary housing, after getting a short-term job at the local fish plant. Local advocates are assisting Florence in finding adequate housing and fulltime employment.
We are asking our community for $10,450.00 to help Florence get started on a path to recovery.
Rent for a one bedroom apartment costs on average $1200.00, First month, last month and one month deposit, in addition to 4 months of rent to secure housing for 6 months= $8400.00
30 days for food, toiletries, and essentials easily costs $1800.00
Clothes for job interviews, and work clothes, shoes would cost $250.00 at minimum
Please help us to protect and support our sister in need. Help us to seek Justice for Florence
