On September 13, 2020, Hakeem Campbell was murdered inside the Federal Bureau of Prisons Atlanta USP facility (hear an interview with his mother here ). Hakeem was a father, a son, a brother, and a friend, and a wonderful human being. He was from Jamaica, and had plans to open a Jamaican food truck to share his family recipes upon release, which was scheduled for 2022. Amidst managing enormous grief, anger, confusion, and abuse by BOP, Hakeem's family is trying to pay off the costs of a funeral that they never should have to have, so that they can place a headstone for his young daughter to visit.
Hakeem was taken in a mass arrest targeting black and brown youth in the Bronx after a pre-dawn raid on his home on April 16, 2016. These raids have since been determined to have been cruel, unusual, and terroristic. Hakeem was pressured, like over 100 other people in his situation, to plea to a crime he did not commit nor have any part in. That plea led to a death sentence.
Now Hakeem's family is seeking justice. They know that the real murderer is the BOP, who allowed Hakeem to be in a life threatening situation, and who furthermore provided a series of lies when his family was just trying to get answers as to the cause of his injuries and murder. His family is still trying to find out what happened, and to hold BOP accountable. From beginning to end, Hakeem’s incarceration and death should not have happened.
We are really asking for community support right now. Violent, preventable deaths happen all too often in BOP and in prisons, which are designed to take life, not give it. It is overwhelming and intimidating to go up against the system, with the prison's lawyers and the government in general protecting its abuses, especially for families who are dealing with their own immense grief. From Jamel Floyd, to Hakeem Campbell, Black Lives Matter, and prisons kill!
You can support by donating funds for Hakeem's daughter and legal fees to help the family right now.
