Justice for Jerime, victim of police brutality
Donation protected
On November 1, 2016 my friend Jerime Mitchell was pulled over by police in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the stated reason for the stop was a "missing license plate light", what transpired next would change Jerime and his family's life forever. With NO justification the police officer (Jones) proceeded to try to detain Jerime - as Jerime attempted to leave the incident, in fear of his life (exacerbated by the deployment of a police dog) the police officer shot Jerime in his neck. This incident has left our friend paralyzed from the neck down. The officer involved was not charged with any crime even though clear video evidence exists that this was an unlawful use of force. Again, the Linn County District Attorney managed to file ZERO charges. The same officer in question shot and killed a 21 year old man in 2015.
Shortly after the incident funds were raised to provide a wheelchair accessible mode of transportation for Jerime and his family. But 4 years later, and for the rest of Jerimes life, there will be untold medical expenses and this crime has left him unable to provide for his family as he did so well prior to the officer attempting to murder him. To call this incident anything else would be false.
In light of recent events my family and I have struggled with the question, like many of you, what can I do to make a difference? I wanted to offer to my network a chance to do something tangible to help a real victim of police violence. Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.
Additional details below:
According to a timeline presented, Mitchell had finished working a late shift Nov. 1 and was going to check on his mother, who was recovering from a stroke. The lawsuit claims include:
• “Jones had no legitimate, articulable reason for initiating the traffic stop.” Authorities have said Jones stopped Mitchell because a license plate light was out, but Mitchell says the light was working.
• Mitchell provided Jones with his license and registration as requested, but then Jones ordered Mitchell out of his truck and attempted to open the door.
• Jones put Mitchell in an arm bar, forced his hands behind his back and pushed him against the truck without telling him why he was being detained.
• Jones kneed Mitchell and swept him to the ground before releasing his police dog. Mitchell asserts Jones ordered the dog to “kill him.” Mitchell then retreated to inside his truck. Jones added explanation about the Dutch language command.
• Once Mitchell was driving away from the scene with Jones still holding on, Jones told Mitchell, “I’m going to kill you, man.”
• Jones “opened fire” on Mitchell, firing multiple shots, one that struck Mitchell and ultimately paralyzed him.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN DONATING WHATEVER YOU CAN (everything helps!) TO HELP. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. 100% of donations received will go directly to Jerime and his wife Bracken. Let's do something good for a great family affected by a tragic crime.
