Justice for Kon
Donation protected
We are creating this fundraiser to support Kon Maiwan who was racially profiled by the Lewiston, Maine Police Department. Kon is a respected member of his community. He is a Morehouse graduate and has dreams of becoming a lawyer. He is a teacher at a local school. Everyday, you will see him passing out water and food to unsheltered people. .
Kon was walking home when two officers decided to follow him. He confronted the officers and told them to stop following him. One officer threatened to arrest him for disorderly conduct. When Kon walked away, the officer chased him for no reason. He threw him on the ground and arrested him. Kon was also pepper sprayed. He was taken to jail where he was stripped searched and put on suicide watch. He has since been released and is waiting for a court hearing in June. We are currently working with him to help get him a lawyer.
The funds that are being raised are for transportation cost because Kon does not have a car. He does not feel safe walking any longer after the trauma he experienced.
Please donate whatever you can to show your support. Let's stand up for a black man whose rights were violated.
- Project Relief is responsible for the management of the fund. The funds will be used to assist Kon with transportation. In the event that their is funds left over, it will be donated to a racial justice organization. We will continue to be transparent with our supporters. Thank you.
Update: We were able to give the funds to Kon. He is currently looking for a vehicle. He also donated some funds to racial justice groups. Two of the charges against him have been dismissed because the officers lied in the report. Thank you everyone for showing your support to Kon.✊
