Justice for Michael Smith

On October 15, 2024, our lives were forever changed by the tragic and senseless loss of Michael Smith, a vibrant 26-year-old who was taken from us far too soon. Michael was not just a son, brother, and friend; he was a kind soul with a bright future ahead of him. He faced challenges due to his mental health, but he approached life with resilience and hope.

Sadly, Michael's journey took a devastating turn while in police custody at USP Big Sandy Maximum Penitentiary, where he was transferred to from DC jail while serving a 6 month sentence for petty theft with people with consecutive life sentences. Michael was murdered under circumstances that remain unclear and troubling. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for reform in the way mental health crises are handled within the justice system. No individual should lose their life while in the hands of the justice system.

We are reaching out to our community to support Michael’s family as they navigate the unimaginable pain of losing their beloved son and brother. The funds raised will go towards:

Funeral Expenses: Ensuring Michael receives the dignified farewell he deserves.

Legal Support: Assisting the family in seeking justice and accountability for what happened to Michael.

Michael had so much love to give and dreams yet to fulfill. We want to honor his memory by advocating for change in our system and ensuring that no other family experiences this heartbreak.

Your generous contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant impact as we fight for justice and healing. Please share this campaign to help raise awareness about the urgent need for mental health reform in our communities.

Thank you for your support, kindness, and compassion. Together, we can ensure Michael’s legacy lives on in our hearts and in the changes we advocate for.
