Justice for Myon Burrell
Myon Burrell has been incarcerated in the Minnesota Department of Corrections for a crime that he had no involvement whatsoever and 100% innocent. At the age of 16 Myon and our mother came from Bemidji, Minnesota to Minneapolis, Minnesota (4.5 hours away) to visit family and a sick uncle who was in the hospital with a few days to live. Myon could not even imagine that this would have been his last days of freedom. November 26, 2002, Myon was arrested as a possible suspect in the murder of 11-year-old Tyesha Edward. She was struck by a stray bullet while doing her homework. The day of Tyesha's death has been a very tragic situation for both families. Less than a month after Myon’s arrest, our mother was driving back home to Bemidji from visiting Myon at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center during a snow storm. The vehicle slid across the center line, hit a tree and blew up. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Senator Amy Klobachar denied Myon to say his last goodbyes and attend the funeral service.
The Minneapolis investigators Rick Zimmerman and prosecutors Amy Klobuchar and Mike Freeman, in his case, chose to make an example out of Myon and wrongfully prosecuted him in 2002 for the murder of Tyesha Edwards.
There was no DNA evidence, no firearm, no physical evidence that could link him to the crime, the location of the crime nor has ever been associated with the two co-defendants on his case. Zimmerman paid people to lie on Myon, others got reduced time on their criminal sentences to falsify statements incriminating Myon. His alibis were never looked into. One specific piece of evidence that would have placed Myon elsewhere is a videotape of him at a nearby store on 38th and Chicago called Cup Foods. This important piece of evidence disappeared along with other evidence that could and would prove Myon's innocence. The person who pulled the trigger admitted to it yet Myon is still behind bars. Cup foods is the same store that the most recent horrific and unhuman death the world got to view together of King George Floyd took place.
The whole process was questionable from the beginning. He never stood a chance at receiving a fair trial. He was tried by the media before he ever stepped foot in a courtroom. His name was incorrectly spelled in the court system and throughout the media as Myron Burrell when his correct name is MYON. The district attorney, Amy Klobuchar, lied about his age. They never certified him as an adult. Hennepin County Jail has his date of birth as March 31, 1985, when his correct birth year is 1986. They made it seem as though he was 17 years old and charged him as an adult without certifying him. They sent him straight to Hennepin County Adult Detention Center and placed him in solitary confinement where he would spend the next several months.16 years old, alone in a cold dark cell with minimal human contact and only one hour out per day to use the phone antake a shower.
It is almost 18 years later and we are still fighting for justice for both Myon and Tyesha Edwards for the truth to come out and for him to finally get to live his life outside of those prison walls. Myon has maintained his innocence in this case since his initial arrest. At the time, he was unaware of the severity of his situation and wholeheartedly believed the police had made a mistake and once they realized they had the wrong person, he would be released to be reunited with his family and loved ones.
We the family of Myon DeMarlo Burrell Sr. need everyone's help with raising funds to provide him with the support and assistance needed to help him gain his freedom.
He's lost his teenage years and so much more. Let's not allow him to continue to lose another second, day, month, or year of his precious life. We are seeking your contributions to the following:
Attorney fees
Legal fees
Forensic investigator
Private Investigator
Additional fees that may come up in the fight for Myon’s freedom
We have new evidence to support his innocence that includes witnesses and an alibi for Myon that place him elsewhere when this crime occurred. THEY NEVER TOOK THE TIME OUT TO LOOK INTO ANYONE ELSE AS A POSSIBLE SUSPECT although they had a lead to another individual that fit the crime and demographics. When given an additional name and being questioned about additional suspects, Sergeant Rick Zimmerman stated: “This is a search for justice and truth, not about throwing out names to try muddy up something”. There are countless times when Myon’s human and civil rights were ignored and violated. We’re fighting to make sure his case gets the attention to the prosecutorial misconduct that we believe resulted in Myon being wrongfully convicted and committed to the Minnesota Department of Corrections for natural life with the possibility of parole after 46 years. Will you stand with us and support Myon be FULLY exonerated for the heinous crime that he did not commit.
