One of the greatest fears for a female living abroad is probably being sexually assaulted. My assault wasn’t like the movies. I wasn’t drugged at a bar or attacked in an alleyway returning to my hostel.

I was sexually assaulted during the day time by my friend.

In the aftermath, I was terrified not only of my assailant but also by the herculean task of reporting my assault to the Japanese police. From female support forums and Japan’s slow acceptance towards the #MeToo Movement, I knew how unlikely it was for a foreign non-Japanese speaking woman to have her sexual assault case taken seriously. However, letting my assailant slip by didn’t sit well with me. He could still hurt other people and I had to do something.

Before I continue, please read the full story of my sexual assault experience below in your preferred language. It’s a quick 8-minute read that you can complete in the time you wait for a bus or an Uber driver. I’d love to explain it all on this page, but I cannot format my pictures in a way that looks good on this webpage.

So, where am I now?

Unfortunately, despite my case being in the public and current ALTs protesting my assailant’s light punishment, the Nagasaki Board of Education refuses to fire my assailant. I cannot directly sue my assailant for damages, in Japan, because I’m not physically injured. If I want to sue him for psychological injuries, then I can only do that in London. However, he is not a permanent resident in London because he lives in Japan.

The best hope I have is to sue Nagasaki Prefecture for a consolation claim lawsuit (lawsuit for national compensation) for sexual harassment.

I’m sure some of you are thinking “wait, weren’t you sexually assaulted? Why is this case for harassment?” In Japanese employment law, there is no claim for sexual assaults, so my assault is categorized as harassment.

For now, I’m using this GoFundMe campaign to raise money to pay for my legal fees. The total expenses are the following:
Initial deposit $1,500 USD/ €1,340/ £1,146.80+ tax
Case fee $1,000 USD/ €892/ £764.50
Miscellaneous fees (e.gtranslator, additional court fees) $1,000 USD/ €892/ £764.50

Please help me in my fight for justice. Share this GoFundMe with your friends and family.
