JUSTICE FOR SHEENA

Donation protected
Hello, thank you for your concern for my daughter, ex police officer Detective Sergeant Sheena Cook, previously Officer in charge of the Buka Criminal Investigation Department of the Bougainville Police Force, Papua New Guinea.

Sheena and me, Bougainville 1983
This fundraiser is to help cover legal and travel costs required in order to achieve JUSTICE FOR SHEENA who is currently being held in custody and being DEPRIVED OF HER HUMAN RIGHTS and suffering deplorable conditions at Buka Police Station. She is there now having been held since 20 February, 2023.

Sheena has sent me a written statement she managed to have smuggled out of her cell and which reached me on 19 September (2023) two days ago at the time of writing this, describing how she was arrested at gun point at night by officers who failed to identify themselves or their purpose, left the 4 small children she was looking after for a cousin, crying and unattended, etc etc...

The long and the short of it is that Sheena is being kept in conditions that are a total disgrace to Papua New Guinea. She says that for 6 months, she has not been able to:
  • have visitors,
  • contact anyone, not her family including her two boys, or a lawyer,
  • change her clothes in 6 months,
  • breathe fresh air or see the sun,
  • or eat fruit or vegetables.
She records how:
  • she was physically searched in the dark, under gun point twice at night by a named male officer when there was no other female present.
  • her cell has lights on 24/7
  • she has zero privacy, being in full view of other prisoners and guards,
  • the sanitary conditions are appalling.

There are no mosquito nets and no mosquito repellents available although it is a high malarial zone. In addition there are no working fans and no air conditioning in an equatorial climate

How does one survive under such conditions?
What has she done to received such hatred and debasing treatment?
I have to ask are they trying to break her?

How can the authorities permit such inhumane treatment on someone for whom the charges are unclear (please see my Facebook postings for further details and numerous photographs.

I have a wide network of contacts in PNG, having worked there for a total of 12 years for goverment (1975-80, 1983-1990) and 2009 to 2011 as a consulting fisheries adviser to a major oil and gas company.

I am confident I have discovered the reason why my daughter is being subjected to such inhumane maltreatment. My belief ... well maybe I'd better keep that to myself.

I need your financial help to fund a lawyer's fees and his and my travel costs to the remote island of Buka, firstly ensure Sheena's safety, medical treatment and then secure her release.

How far we go with an inquiry as to why this has occurred and whether we seek damages will be subject to legal advice and finances.

This breaks my heart: the washing and sanitary conditions Sheena is experiencing are disgusting. Can you imagine having to wear the same clothing day and night for six months and having only limited access to only cold water? She says she has been denied the opportunity to arrange for a change of clothing, etc. etc.

So, yes, please check my Facebook page, I am David Cook, graduate from Aberdeen University in 1974, majoring in Zoology and, after 5 years as a fisheries biologist and then resource development officer in PNG, did my Post-graduate in Fisheries Management, Tropical and Temperate on a UK Government, Overseas Development Administration national scholarship in Grimsby, UK, 1980 -81.

Please do donate to help achieve JUSTICE FOR SHEENA. Our family and especially Sheena, a single mum, and her two school age boys will be eternally grateful.

I have opened a separate bank account, my reference JUSTICE FOR SHEENA to cater for all fundraising banking transactions for accountability purposes.

If fundraising exceeds the amount required to secure her release and reinstatement of her employment entitlements, then any extra will go towards her two boy's education costs and help pay up the outstanding house loan she has had to default on.

For her safety she and her boys may have to relocate to another PNG Province as Sheena and her mum opted for PNG citizennship when she could have had Australian.

Thank you.
David Cook
Proud to be Sheena's dad!
