Thank you to every single person who has donated, shared and commented so far. You're all amazing!
This fund is to raise money to help towards a project to safeguard the Swans of Alkrington Woods / Rhodes Lodges. On the evening of Saturday 30th May 2020 it is suspected that 3 persons purposely tormented, harassed and eventually murdered the very much loved Cygnet eggs, which were just about to hatch within days.
A concrete/rock slab was thrown into the nest and also two bricks into another nest. Two attacks happened, one in Alkrington Woods, Middleton the other in a location in Heywood. This was cruelty beyond belief. Reckless, mindless, cruel and frankly frightening to imagine what the future holds for the people who did this. This is a vile and cruel act which has left a community in uproar. One of the Swans has been seen with one of their dead cygnets in their beak on the lodge, circling, absolutely distressed.
Swans are protected by law from anyone, anywhere in UK hurting them under the Wild Creatures & Forest Law Act 1971.
I've had lengthy conversations with Rochdale Police & RSPCA both have open investigations into this appauling crime inflicted on defenseless protected animals. The animal of our culture, heritage and Queen. I will also be going to various media outlets to educate people on the importance of all our wildlife.
I am sure everyone who has donated would like to have peace of mind that their donations will be used towards a positive and constructive project to help protect the Swans, Cygnets and eggs. I am currently sourcing assistance with perhaps protection boxes for nesting Swans. I will let all know who has donated where every single penny will be spent. The donations will not go to a general charity, they will be used specifically for the Swans and their young in Alkrington Woods / Rhodes Lodges.
A new Facebook page has been created for anyone who would like to follow and keep up to date with the up-coming project.
