Last month in Querétaro, my cousin, Dany, suffered an unimaginable loss when her 17-year-old daughter, Valentina, was brutally murdered.

Valentina broke up with her boyfriend, Luis Fernando N. Later, he went to her home when he knew she would be alone. She did not let him in, but he forced his way in when a food delivery arrived. He stabbed Valentina multiple times. The autopsy report notes asphyxiation as the cause of death, meaning that the stabbings didn’t kill her; he choked her to death as she bled out. An hour and a half after he forced his way in, Dany came home and found the murderer and her daughter’s body.

The State Attorney General of Querétaro has classified the murder as a homicide. Dany and our family is fighting for it to be classified as a femicide (a gender-based hate crime), which carries a heavier sentence.

Women are not property. No woman owes her love or her time to any man, and no woman should have to pay with her life for breaking up with a man. The loss of Valentina is irreparable, but we hope for justice at the very least.

Donations will help with burial costs, legal and filing fees, replacement of furniture that was bloodied or broken during the murder, counseling, and living and moving costs as it is impossible for Dany to return to the home in which her daughter was so senselessly killed.

El mes pasado en Querétaro, mi prima Dany sufrió una pérdida inimaginable cuando su hija de 17 años, Valentina, fue brutalmente asesinada.

Valentina rompió con su novio, Luis Fernando N. Más tarde, fue a su casa cuando supo que ella estaría sola. Ella no lo dejó entrar, pero él entró a la fuerza cuando llegó una entrega de comida. Apuñaló a Valentina varias veces. El informe de la autopsia señala la asfixia como la causa de la muerte, lo que significa que los apuñalamientos no la mataron; él la estranguló hasta la muerte mientras se desangraba. Una hora y media después de que entrara a la fuerza, Dany llegó a casa y encontró al asesino y el cuerpo de su hija.

La Fiscalía General del Estado de Querétaro ha catalogado el asesinato como un homicidio calificado. Dany y nuestra familia están luchando para que sea catalogado como un feminicidio, que conlleva una pena maxima.

Las mujeres no son propiedad. Ninguna mujer le debe su amor o su tiempo a ningún hombre, y ninguna mujer debería pagar con su vida por romper con un hombre. La pérdida de Valentina es irreparable, pero al menos esperamos justicia.

Las donaciones ayudarán con los costos del entierro, los costos legales y de presentación, el reemplazo de los muebles que se ensangrentaron o se rompieron durante el asesinato, el asesoramiento y los costos de vivienda y mudanza, ya que es imposible que Dany regrese a la casa en la que su hija fue asesinada sin sentido.
