The Justice for Desmond Phillips campaign stands with the families of all those who have been murdered by police. March 17, 2017 Chico police murdered my son Desmond Phillips in his own home after I called 911 for medical assistance because Desmond was in mental health crisis. He had PTSD from being brutalized by Sacramento police several months earlier. Desmond was a 25 year old Black and Native (Miwok) man who needed help and was no direct threat to anyone when officers Jared Cumber, Alex Fliehr, Jeremey Gagnebin, Derek Ament, and David Martin charged into his home, tased him and immediately opened fire killing Desmond and endangering his family and neighbors. Police were on the scene for 7 minutes before Desmond was dead. I witnessed my son's murder. The police and District Attorney lied, and the evidence shows that. The officers were back to work 3 weeks later. A few months later Gagnebin and Fliehr assisted in the murder of Tyler Rushing. Chico PD has several officers who have been involved in multiple police killings. We demand that all killer cops be fired. We demand that the City of Chico empower a Civilian Oversight Board with disciplinary power to investigate misconduct by police. We demand murder charges for the cops who killed Desmond. We demand that implicit bias, de-escalation, and mental health intervention become a mandatory focus of officer training for all officers. We demand that Chico PD "Use of Deadly Force" policy become compliant with CA State law enacted through AB392. We demand that Chico PD be compliant with CA State law enacted through SB1421 - they must release records of the officers involved in these deadly shootings. We demand the City of Chico defund the police who receive over half of the city budget - that money should be invested in actual resources for the community.

We have been fighting for Justice for over 3 years. We are raising money to support the continuation of this fight. I would like to hire a private investigator to review the evidence from the case. We will keep pushing for policy change. When Desmond moved in with me shortly before he was killed, he asked if we could make it a father & son thing to feed homeless community members every Sunday after church. I have continued to do that tradition in my son's name and I have paid for it mostly out of my own pocket. Your donations with support that as well.
