A Personal Letter To My Friends:
By now, many of you have received correspondence on my conviction of federal crimes on July 27, 2018. The trial lasted five weeks and only the prosecution presented their case to the jury. I was strongly advised by my attorneys not to present a defense because it was in their professional opinion that the prosecutors did not prove by way of evidence or witness that I was guilty of any of the alleged charges. The other co-defendants were given same advice by their attorneys. I must admit that during the 21 days of listening and observing the prosecutor’s case, I was also convinced that the alleged charges were not proven and that full acquittal was imminent. Unfortunately, the jury, who were all selected from rural counties in Ohio, deliberated for less than two days and convicted me as well as the other co-defendants of all charges alleged by the government. I was shocked by the verdict. My initial thoughts of the unfair verdict reminded me of pre-civil rights victims and my southern ancestors. I instantly realized that I must fight for justice and my freedom.
Since my conviction, I have interviewed many appellate attorneys seeking candid counsel on an appeal. I have received overwhelming feedback from these interviews that I should appeal and will likely have positive outcomes on most, if not all of the charges. The trial was very emotional and often a physical challenge for me and my family. The finances that I personally invested in the trial and the opening of a new practice in 2016, has completely drained all of my personal savings and retirement funds.
I have asked Dr. Anthony (Tony) Calloway to lead my campaign to raise money for my appeal. I am asking all of my friends, most of whom I’ve known for over 40 years, to help with this fundraiser, so that I can have an adequate and successful appeal. Tony and I will be contacting you over the next few days with specific information on how you can support my appeal campaign.
I will continue to fight for justice and I ask you to please keep my family in your prayers. We thank you for your support and look forward to my return home.
Sincerely,
Dr. Edward (Rudy) Hills and Family
