Hello, my name is Justice Medina, I am 20 years old and I have become a social activist in my hometown of Fresno, Ca. In one day I went from just being a young man trying to figure out life on a daily basis, to becoming a leader and the face of this movement of love, unity, and community in my home town. On Saturday July 9th, 2016, I organized a peaceful protest and march against police brutality and corruption, that brought out over 500 people. We marched over 10 miles, while police officers shut down roads and intersections. Because of my actions and support I received from the people that stood behind me, I was arrested and charged with "obstructing the sidewalk" (which they said we could of stayed on) and "special event no permit."
For these misdemeanor charges I received, I have to pay 20 thousand dollars back to the city of Fresno. Being that I am 20 years old and work a job that only pays me $11.50 an hour, it would be extremely difficult and almost impossible for me to pay off this fine along side the citations and fees I will recieve on my court date. I am asking for this help with a humble heart, because I also need to secure a lawyer, to make sure I am protected under this legal system here in the USA. I also will never be able to explain the amount of relief I have felt, the inspiration i wake up to on a daily basis, and the amount of joy that has been placed in my heart because of the support of countless individuals that stand with me and believe in what we are fighting for. I am also in need of more supplies to keep organizing more peaceful protest in unique and creative ways.
I have never been one to beg... I have never been one to ask for a handout... but unfortunately I need your help, to keep this fight against this corrupt system going.
Since my first protest I have ever organized or been apart of on July 9th, I have recieved numerous death threats... I have been demonized by media outlets.. close friends, loved ones, and family memebers have been harassed by corrupt and miseducated police officers... to try to silence and supress the peaceful movement I started to bring together the community (of Fresno, Ca) to take a united stand against the systemic corruption in the police department. And to also hold, the public officials put into power by us and for us, accountable to the needs of our city.
During this past weekI have been confused and heart broken, and distraught. It was hard to eat because of this pain, I couldn't sleep because my mind was troubled, I couldn't even shower because I've been spending every moment of my time to bring more awareness to this united movement. And my source of heart ache, comes from explaining countless times to children and young adults, of all creeds and colors in my community
Why they have to question... the establisment meant to serve and protect.
Why they cannot believe certain media outlets meant to educate and spread arwareness
Why we cannot trust certain politicians, that are meant to stand by the accountablity given to them by the people, to commit to making a change for the greater good in our community.
And bluntly put, why we have to see numerous human beings... regardless of race, regardless of differing beliefs and ideology, and regardless of minor differences created by the system to divide our people, who are given the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, under our constitution. Slain time after time in our neighborhoods.
I cannot and will not stand by silently and let the next generation of children, fall victim to these countless injustices, I will stand for and fight for our people, even if I stand alone.... I will stand with my head held high with a spirt of optimism until the day my heart stops beating, for the freedoms we deserve as human beings.
So please if you believe we can take down this system together, if you believe it is a time for change, if you believe that we must spread love and be united in this cause and want to support, I ask solemnly to give what you can. And stand with me, as I stand with you.
Thank You.
