A door has been opened for me to learn from a genius about the role of dance in community building, and there is nothing I'd love more than to go!
At this stage of my life I think of my dance career with such a mixture of emotion. It was wonderful, but also limited, and in this stage of motherhood and fitness teaching, I wonder if the gift of dance must only belong to children and professionals.
Could the boundaries of dance be expanded? Could they be more inclusive? Could that renew my experience of myself and my community? Could it renew yours?
Liz Lermon has been expanding the boundaries of dance for the past 40 years. She's the recipient of numerous awards, and next week she'll be sharing her experience with people like me at the Dance Exchange's Winter Institute in Maryland.
"I am interested in remembering why I started to dance and how happy I was at that moment; in what we dance about; in who gets to do the dancing…in the moment when people who are too fat, too clumsy, too old, too sick to dance actually step out and dance, and how transformed the dancer and the watcher are in that moment." - Liz Lermon
I've been eyeing and avoiding this event for a month, becuase its more than I can afford at the moment, but I've decided to listen to my heart, and so I'm reaching out to see if you'll help me get there! What's the worst that can happen, right?!
Oh, and I've got about 4 days to pull this trip together, so if you are going to contribute do so soon!
