My name isBrittany Campbell. I am married to a Nepali man, Bikash Gautam. When I entered this relationship, and we married I never knew that I would also marry and fall in love with Nepal as well. The first time I went was for our marriage. We were married in his parents yard in Pipaldangi a smallvillage community in eastern Nepal in the Morang District. It is a small community of basically subsistance rice farmers. The roads are unpaved, the housing is mostly traditional bamboo, wood, and mud huts. The people are hardened by grueling work, long days, and overall hardships of living in a very traditional way. Fortunately some of them have been able to send their children for work in foreign countries like Malaysia, Macau, and Dubai. So, there has been some improvements in some people's quality of life. However, the many people are still merely exisiting, and working every day to place food on the table for that day.
My family and I returned to visit his family again this past December. I had raised money from my fellow teachers to buy some clothes and toys for a few families that lived close by. With that money we were able to buy jackets, shoes, socks, hats and blankets for 11 children. It was a small miracle for them, and graciousness and graditude that they showed was amazing and heartwarming.
This trip I was less shy to be a foriegner in their village, so I ventured off to the schools. I went to both the public school and private school to visit the facilities, meet kids, meet the teachers, and overall experience how they learn.
I was amazed, shocked and overwhelmed.
I was amazed at the vivaciousness of the students, and their passion and dreams. I asked students what they wanted to be when they grew up, and it ranged from soccer star to doctor or computer engineer. They had light and passion that had not yet been dimed despite the hardship of their daily life.
I was shocked at the conditions of the school buildings. Some rooms did not have all of the walls, and were improvised with bamboo walls. There was no electricity, no glass windows, no color. Just white plain concrete walls.
I was overwhelmed by the amount of work that needed to be done. The improvements that could be made, and facilities that could be updated. The dreams that needed help to be fulfilled.
So, my plan is to now attempt to build 2 libraries. One for each school. I am hoping that we can come together as a global community to help this small community put books in the hands of children. To help them make their dreams come true.
One of the schools has extra rooms for the library, but they have nothing in them. The other school has no building for a library and no books. There is very minimal electricity, so a computer lab is out of the question at the moment. But if we can build a library together, put books in the hands of children, and open to them a world that they could have only dreamed of we can make a difference.
So join me in building a library!
