Support Damaged DC Community Pharmacy
Donation protected
Last night all four of our family pharmacies (Grubbs NE Capitol Hill, Grubbs NW Dupont, Grubbs SE Anacostia, Morgan’s Pharmacy Georgetown) were broken into for the fourth time in a row since the protests started. The first few times, our security system was able to stave off intruders however this time around, the system did not go off and intruders were able to break in and take much more. Amongst the up front merchandise and inventory were already packed prescriptions for our community, critical medicine that will not be able to go out to our community today.
Though a portion of the damages will be covered by insurance, insurance payments generally take a few weeks to come in. While other businesses including big chain pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens can stand to wait, the way an independent community pharmacy operates makes it extremely difficult to front a drug inventory order ahead of time.
Most pharmacies take a huge credit line every time they make a drug order which can run upwards of $1 million every two weeks. Though most of that is paid back at the end of the month, most of the revenue is used to pay for next month’s order.
Grubb's Capitol Hill is DC's oldest pharmacy + Morgan's in Georgetown DC's second. Since 1868 Grubb's has worked to serve D.C. communities. Many of our community businesses exist for the sole reason of helping he community; to redistribute community money so that they can provide a service that everyone can benefits from (restaurants, dry cleaners, hair salons).
With the nature of a pharmacy, giving back to our community is a time-sensitive matter. Our business exists to provide this community - patients, their families and caregivers - with the medicine, equipment and care it needs to survive. The process to rebuild, unlike larger companies that can afford to wait, not only affects our business, but also prohibits the larger community from receiving the proper healthcare that it deserves and requires.
We’ve set up a GoFundMe to raise money to at least cover the immediate damages and plan to donate any additional funds to as many surrounding affected black-owned small businesses as possible. When the insurance comes through, we plan to redistribute that money to those same black-owned businesses. We are still looking for local DC businesses to help out so please message the campaign if you have suggestions.
Fund Breakdown:
$10k for Grubbs SE Anacostia
$5k for Morgan's Pharmacy Georgetown
$5k for Grubbs NE Capitol Hill
$5k for Grubbs NW Specialty Pharmacy Dupont Circle
Funds will be used to repair windows, door, broken down wall, and short term necessary inventory.
#blacklivesmatter and the protests are necessary to affect changes in our police system which actively tries to keep down black communities. We recognize the violent injustices against the black community, the frustration, anger and fear that our own employees have to face daily. We do not want to diminish these injustices and we stand in solidarity. Just as we want our police officers to stop killing and our communities to thrive, small businesses who work tirelessly to already improve and care for our communities need to survive to be able to see that future.
