Home Repairs After Hurricane Harvey
Donation protected
As you know, Hurricane Harvey was a category 4 storm that was so devastating to the Texas gulf coast. About 36 hours after Harvey made landfall for the last time our world was turned upside down. We live in Orange, TX, approximately 25 miles from the gulf coast and nowhere near a flood zone; therefore, we didn’t have flood insurance. Tropical storm Harvey dumped 15 inches of rain in our town in less than 3 hours. The flood waters rose to almost 4 feet in the first floor of our 2 story home. Thank God and with a lot of effort by the Cajun Navy, my husband, Bobby was finally rescued at a pick-up location. Luckily, we have a small “John boat” that he used to first transport our elderly neighbors trapped in their homes to a designated pick-up location where they were taken by buses to safety. Once neighbors were evacuated, Bobby returned to our home only to grab a pair of shorts and rescued our 2 poodles before returning to the pick-up zone leaving his boat behind tied to a street sign. The flood waters rose very fast and the cold, muddy water caused the floors to become very dangerous, slippery and unsafe. Before evacuating, Bobby was able to take a few smaller items upstairs; my work computer, a TV, some paperwork, single chairs, some hand tools, but most everything else was ruined. The flood waters damaged nearly everything on the first floor; our furniture including all our belongings in our bedroom and living area, some appliances, clothes, cookware, HVAC system, my home office and almost everything used in daily living. Luckily, I was in Dallas during this time working in the National Life Group's Addison office when Harvey hit; so, my car and the clothes I packed were saved.
Unfortunately, our home owners insurance will not cover any of the damages, other than cleaning our tile floor in one room once everything else is repaired. Many friends and family have donated their time and supplies to help with the clean-up. We appreciate everyone and could not have gotten this far without all of their help. But, we still have a long way to go to get back to any type of normal home-life. A friend from North Texas came to help a few days ago and her first comment was “Where do you begin, there is devastation everywhere”? My response was, “One day and one item at a time.”
A month ago, I would have never thought I would be in need. I’ve tried to always live by, “It is more blessed to give, than to receive”; so, it is so hard to ask for help.
Anything you can provide to help us rebuild and replace lost items would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and may God bless you for your generosity and the good you are doing. With much gratefulness,
Karolyn and Bobby Bailey
