Hope for Heidi Welsh
Heidi is a beautiful and gifted thirty-six year old mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece and friend to many. She is full of life and a strength and fortitude that has carried her through many big challenges in life.
In the spring of last year, Heidi was experiencing complications that sent her to the doctor where tests revealed cancer - stage 1B. It had been caught early, a full recovery was expected. Heidi tackled her recommended treatment with tenacity while continuing to put 100% into her job, which is necessary to support her family.
By summertime, she was feeling better and in the clear. Even though she was healing from an unrelated injury, she was looking forward to getting back on track financially and working hard towards a healthy and bright future. She had beaten cancer - as far as everyone knew.
Around Thanksgiving, Heidi started experiencing pain that sent her back to the doctor. The doctors discovered shocking results - even to them. The cancer isn’t gone. In fact, is is extremely aggressive and has spread to her lymph-nodes. There they broke the news to Heidi that the cancer is at stage 4 and is terminal. It requires aggressive treatment in order to extend her life. There are experimental treatments available in the near future, if she qualifies. In the meantime she’s to start her chemotherapy with the hope that she will be accepted into the next - potentially life-saving - study.
Over the holidays Heidi and her family absorbed the news while she did her homework and got accepted into MD Anderson. Last week, she met with top-rated doctors who confirmed that the battle ahead would be a tough one, and that treatment should start as soon as possible.
Heidi’s next round of treatments are due to start this week. She has been told that unlike the last treatments she went through, now she will be unable to work.
As you can imagine, this news has Heidi, her family and friends reeling. As a strong, energetic, healthy individual full of fight and passion - it’s hard to imagine she will have to use all of that fire within her to battle for her life.
We all want to help somehow.
Heidi’s family has decided to try to fulfill one of her “Bucket List” wishes - a family road trip. While it’s very short notice, and the family is juggling to make it work, the trip is scheduled for Spring Break. It’s to be something for Heidi to look forward to as she courageously faces the unknown future.
The family sees this as an opportunity for Heidi to watch her children experience new places, to make priceless memories, to celebrate life - living to the fullest, and to have quality time together.
Heidi has always been a hard worker. She has developed a life for her and her family after facing incredible challenges in her journey. Her main worry and stress right now is how her household will make it financially as she will no longer be able to work starting February 1st.
Heidi’s mother, Mary Coleman, has initiated setting up an account for the benefit of Heidi. Her hope is that Heidi won’t have to worry about her finances, but will be able to put all of her energy into healing. She also hopes to use a portion of the funds raised to help Heidi have her “Bucket List” trip with loved ones.
