Help A Young Family Rebuild Their Home

Donation protected
In August of 2020, Sam and Kylie bought their first home in anticipation of Kylie returning back to Canada after 4 years overseas. It wasn’t until October that Kylie was able to return home due to Covid complications, however, these two were so excited to start their lives together. After almost 4 years and the birth of their daughter, what should have been a straightforward insurance repair turned into a nightmare when a portion of their house collapsed.

A contractor was excavating the driveway to replace their collapsed sewer line, the disturbed soil shifted, and the foundation let go, causing a portion of their home to collapse into the open trench. Gas and hydro connections were damaged and all utilities had to be disconnected. With no utilities and the house now structurally unstable, the family was forced out of their home. Living in hotels and parents’ homes, they have not been able to return to their home, which remains partially collapsed and exposed to the elements after 5 months.

They tried to do everything right. They had home insurance. They hired a reputable contractor for the repair. However, home insurance and the contractor now deny all responsibility, leaving this family to fend for themselves. They've secured a lawyer. The lawyer tells them that because legal claims can take years to resolve, they'll have to pay to fix their home out of their own pockets, and then pursue the insurer and contractor. The lawyer also says there's a real chance they won't be able to recoup all the costs, and that they'll continue to suffer from this for years to come. It is impossible for them to do this without financial help.

Time is of the essence. With things like their daughter's kindergarten registration coming up, this family is left without a home or knowing where they'll be. Multiple engineering firms, restoration companies, and contractors have been brought in in order to sort out costs and create a repair plan. Original estimates were between $600,000 to $800,000. Numerous headaches and delays have occurred. Numbers have finally been revised, but it will still require a huge amount - an amount this family cannot afford without financial assistance. Please consider helping them get home.
