Vet Bills

Donation protected

If you know me, you know I am an animal lover. Most of the time, I prefer to be around animals over humans. One of the hardest things about moving back to the South is the amount of injured or killed animals I have come across.

On my way to work Tuesday morning, I saw this big beautiful German Shepard in the middle of the road. I witnessed 2 trucks just drive right over him like he wasn’t even there. I pulled over and waited there for about an hour, went around and knocked on a few doors, and got a lot of honks and middle fingers for blocking the road. I got him loaded up in my car and rushed him home. He was bleeding badly from his feet, abdomen, and nose, so I cleaned him up as best as I could. I left him in the car and I comforted him until we could find an emergency vet. I was sure he wasn’t going to make it, but then I remembered it was my birthday. I looked back at him, and with the eye contact he gave me I knew that I had to save him. I truly believe that this opportunity to save his life was thrown at me, especially on a day when I turned 26 years old. So, I ran inside and grabbed some towels, water, and crackers, and I started to get hopeful. He became more coherent and lifted his head up and drink an entire bowl of water. He licked all over my hands and I sat there rubbing him and talking to him. After getting a call back from the vet, I rushed him in and it was immediately assessed that he had head trauma and a broken femur in his back right leg. I was advised to leave him there with the vet. After a few hours, they called me and let me know that they’d found his owners. I begged them to please keep me updated, and after a long 28 hours, they gave me an update.

His official diagnosis is a severely shattered femur which will require extensive surgery to put plates and rods in, as well as severe nerve damage in his front right leg, in addition to some head trauma and cuts and scrapes all over his body. As of now, we are unsure if he will be able to walk on his own again.

The official vet bill costs are TBD, but I do know that it is going to be extremely expensive based on his injures. I will know more tomorrow on actual costs, but I would love to get a head start on gathering donations for this sweet baby. The road to recovery is going to be very bumpy, but I know that he will pull through.

Having 3 dogs myself, while working a very extensive job and having a wife who is out of town in the fire academy, I will definitely be on the lookout for a reliable foster for him. The recovery will not be easy, especially since it is unknown if he will gain feeling back in his front legs. We will reach that road when we get there, but the first step is getting him the treatment and procedures he needs.

You got this, King!
