On Sunday, November 19, Magda and Martin Aguero brought their 1 year old daughter to the clinic for a cough that would not go away. The clinic diagnosed Sandra with bronchitis and provided instructions to Martin and Magda on how to treat the bronchitis and warning signs to watch for. On Tuesday, November 21 Magda called the nurse line when they saw Sandra's breathing getting worse and the nurse asked them to bring her to the Children's Hospital Emergency Room. That night, Magda and Sandra rushed to the emergency room while Martin stayed home to care for big brother Sebastian and dog Ace.

Upon taking X-rays of Sandra's chest, the doctors discovered a tumor below her right lung that they determined was Neuroblastoma, a form of cancer most common in young children. They needed to do an emergency operation to remove the tumor as soon as the specialists were available after the Thanksgiving weekend. While they waited for the surgery over the long weekend, Sandra's breathing became worse and they decided to sedate and intubate her on Saturday, November25. At this point, Magda and Martin could no longer hold their little girl that just celebrated her first birthday in October.

The operation to remove the tumor and take a bone marrow sample went as good as they could expect, removing 98% of the tumor. The tumor was 8 inches/12cm in diameter and pressing, squishing her right lung and pressing on her heart and main vessels. The days after the operation were full of monitoring her health and performing scans to fully understand the cancer, resulting in a confirmation of a stage 3 cancer that is expected to react well to chemo and has not spread to other parts of the body. Sandra continues to recover from the surgery, allowing her lungs to function a little better each day and spreading out doses of medications.

On Monday, December 4th they were able to take the tube out of Sandra and bring her out of sedation. On Tuesday of that week, Magda was able to hold Sandra for the first time in over a week. Sandra has been in the PICU for over three weeks and her hospital discharge depends on her recovery from the operation, lung health and reaction to the initial chemo treatment(s). She continues to improve a little each day, preparing for an expected 4-6 months of chemo treatments.

All money raised will be given to Magda and Martin to help their family face the bills that come with Sandra's cancer treatment and long hospital stay. We hope to lower the stress of finances, so they can focus on supporting Sandra back to health on top of caring for big brother Sebastian and dog Ace.

We sincerely thank you for every dollar donated. Every little bit helps and we're immensely grateful.
