The purpose of the Thurston County Unit of Washington Explorer Search and Rescue (TCWESAR) is to be an all-volunteer organization to provide life-saving search and rescue services for the State of Washington. We provide people, planning, coordination, logistics, training, and equipment to support emergency responses for the Thurston County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Military Department's Emergency Management Division. The TCWESAR is the only ground search unit in Thurston County, the “911 of the woods." The unit was founded in 1977 as one of the first youth-based search and rescue organizations in the nation. We have volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
