Donate to help Kai get top surgery

Kai is 18 years old and trans.

Kai's life has been on hold and he’s desperate to be able to move forward. Kai could have a further 5+ year wait for his top surgery, unless we can raise the funds ourselves.

The number of referrals for trans young people to the NHS for children under 11 has quadrupled since 2009, giving more people Kai an opportunity to be themselves - but it has also created long waiting lists as the services don't have enough funding to deal with it adequately.

My Genderation has been documenting Kai’s journey since he was 9. If you've been positively impacted by Kai's films or are just hearing about him now, please consider supporting Kai in this quest.

A word from Kai's mum, Rachel:

"Kai has always been a funny and loving person and I'm so proud to see him growing into the kind and generous young man he is today. The My Genderation films about Kai have inspired and encouraged so many, and I would love to see him get what he needs after this already long journey."

Here's a message from Kai:

Hi everyone, I’m Kai. I created this fundraiser to raise money for my top surgery - which I've been waiting for ever since I hit puberty.

I started life being perceived as a girl – and knew from the age of three that something wasn't right, and that I had been assigned the wrong sex and gender at birth. I never fit in, and by four, I refused to wear dresses because that's what girls were supposed to do – and at six I wanted my hair cut short and express myself in a more boyish way. By nine, I had finally broken the truth to my mother Rachel, telling her: ‘I’m really a boy.'

As soon as I began school, I knew that I felt much more comfortable expressing myself in the same way as the other boys. I felt that parts of my body didn't fit me - from my lower parts, to my chest to my voice, and I knew that I needed to seek support to become who I knew myself to be.

I was given counselling when my schoolwork started to suffer, and later decided to confront the issue head-on. I finally came out not knowing who would be there not, and without knowing if my mum would look at me the same - but I did it, because I knew I had to. Thankfully my mum has supported me every step of the way, and I am so grateful for that.

Within a few months, my behaviour and schoolwork improved, and I almost instantly became much happier as a person. Once people stopped referring to me as a girl I just felt like me. There have been plenty of tears, but also plenty of laughs and life lessons through this journey.

But now I’m 18 which means I can get the surgery I’ve been waiting for, for longer than anything else. At the moment, waiting lists for top surgery via the NHS is running up to 4-5 years, and I simply can't wait that long. I'm therefore starting this fundraiser in hopes that I can raise enough money to have surgery privately.

That's where I need your help - any donation, support or sharing of this fundraiser are massively appreciated helps me being able to reach my goal and to feel comfortable in my own skin. Thank you!
