Kanisha’s survival fund

Donation protected
Kanisha Johnson and her children recently experienced a horrific tragedy: Her ex-husband showed up at her home unannounced, approached her in the garage, told her what a good woman she is and how he screwed up the relationship... then pulled out a gun and shot her in the head! He then put her bleeding body in her car, drove her to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, dumped her body on the curb, and left her there to die…

The bullet went in through Kanisha’s left ear and traveled down her neck before it exited out her right shoulder. (See images below.) Her doctors can’t believe she is still alive. The bullet miraculously missed her major arteries, as well as critical parts of her brain and spinal cord. Kanisha is a true miracle!

According to the doctors, Kanisha is just starting on her long journey to full recovery. She has limited movement with her head and shrapnel remains in her body. Her ear will need many surgeries as well.

Kanisha is also concerned for her four children: a 9th grader at La Jolla High, an 8th grader and 7th grader at CPMA, and a 4th grader at Chollas Elementary School. Trying to cope mentally and emotionally after an incident such as this is hard enough for a child, but these kids are also burdened with worries about not having enough food, clothes, shelter or transportation now that Kanisha lost her job due to her injury. She also lost her car as it now has “biohazards” inside (blood, etc.) thus making it illegal to use or sell without remediation/cleaning – which costs more than the car does.

Can you help Kanisha and her kids?

Six members of our community agreed to form a committee to oversee the GoFundMe donations to ensure all monies raised will go towards paying bills (medical, utility, cell phone, youth activities, etc.) as well as gift cards to grocery stores, Target/Walmart, etc. Paul Stephens, a family friend, has opened a separate bank account which will solely be used for these funds (withdrawals from GoFundMe and payments for bills/needed items). This account will be audited by the committee on a regular basis. The committee also created a SignUpGenius for people to donate specific items needed by the family – please click here to view.

If money remains in this fund after all the bills are paid and all the kids are fed, the KSF (Kanisha’s Survival Fund) Committee will try to purchase the family a used car to replace the one lost in the crime. If additional monies remain, college funds (529 accounts) will be started for each of her four children.

For those of you who are fortunate enough to be in a position to help Kanisha and her children on a larger scale, please email [email redacted]

Thank you for being a part of our wonderful community – one that takes care of others during hard times such as these.
