Kara Tornell Support Fund, COVID Victim Mom of 7

The entire Tornell family is devastated and heartbroken by the sudden death of Kara Tornell, 46, of Des Moines, Iowa, who tragically passed away from COVID-19 after a long fight on December 22, 2021, just days before Christmas, leaving behind her beloved husband and soulmate of 25 years, Preston Tornell, and 7 children (Elizabeth (24), Abigail (22), Charlize (20), Charles (17), Braeden (14), Victoria (10) and Grayson (4). Kara’s mom, Carol, sadly also unexpectedly died from COVID-19, just days before Kara’s passing.

 

Kara had been hospitalized after contracting COVID-19 over Thanksgiving weekend. Her mother, husband and children also all contracted the virus. After weeks in the hospital, the doctors released Kara, who was elated to be home in time for Christmas with her husband and children. After two days at home, she fainted and was rushed by ambulance back to the hospital. She suffered a collapsed lung and was put on a ventilator. Kara, being the incredibly strong woman that she was, fought hard through the night, Preston never leaving her side. Her vitals showed signs of stabilizing and there was cause for hope as everyone continued to pray for Kara’s recovery. However, the damage to Kara’s lungs and pressure on her heart caused irreparable damage to her organs. After a long fight, heaven gained an angel on December 22.

There are not enough words to describe how amazing of a woman Kara was. She touched so many lives with her contagious smile and laugh, hilarious sense of humor, and unconditional love for her seven children and husband of 25 years. Kara was the consummate mother and role model for her children, their best friend and biggest supporter. She loved them unconditionally and raised them with Preston to be equally as loving, moral, and family oriented. Saying goodbye to their mom is the most difficult and unimaginable thing these kids will ever have to go through.

 

Kara and Preston each worked incredibly hard to provide for their family. Kara worked full time from home while also caring for her youngest child Grayson (4). However, Kara and Carol’s deaths have now left the family in a state of shock and disbelief, trying to process what has happened, and pick up the pieces of their lives without their mom or their grandma, and Preston without his best friend and wife. The family now faces a difficult financial battle, with mounting medical bills from Kara’s extended hospital stay and funeral costs for mom and grandma. In addition, Preston needs to arrange childcare for his youngest children, Grayson and Victoria, and continue to pay for ongoing bills without Kara’s income.
