Karen Cunningham Memorial Scholarship
Donation protected
The family and friends of Karen Cunningham have established a Foundation in her name to honor Karen’s legacy. Karen had a deep commitment to Glenbrook North High School and its students, including her time as a student herself (Outstanding Girl Class of ’84) and over 30 years as an English teacher and instructional leader. We are establishing a scholarship in her name to ensure her commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive classrooms and her belief that literature can foster reflection, empathy, and service to others will continue to inspire GBN students long into the future.
The Karen Cunningham Memorial Award will be given out to deserving seniors who embody Karen’s spirit each year at the annual Awards Assembly beginning this May. We’ve already received 21 applications for the award this year. Our goal is to raise $125,000 to fund the annual scholarship in perpetuity. Beyond that, we would like to make donations in memory of Karen to cancer-related organizations that she developed strong connections with during her four-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer.
To those of you who knew Karen, we don’t need to explain what a unique and wonderful human being she was. To those of you who may not be familiar with Karen, please visit the Foundation website to learn more about her remarkable impact. It is worth reading (many times) because who she was and how she lived her life can serve as an inspiration to all of us. Her warm spirit, infectious laugh, and passion for learning will always remain in the lives of all who loved and admired her.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
