Karen Powers' Lung Cancer Fundraiser

Karen Gail Bishop Powers is a wonderful mother of two loving children, Leah and Max, and an awesome grandmother to two more kiddos, Tiferet and Rivkah. She enjoys drinking coffee with her son, watching mystery TV shows, visiting her grandchildren, and (as the picture shows) dancing! She is a kind and loving woman who has spent her life as an active member of the Long Island Deaf community and as one of the friendliest faces you’ll ever see when you enter Walmart.

It breaks our heart to announce Karen is currently in the hospital battling cancer and could really use some help for living expenses and medical bills.

Soon after her son's wedding in September 2022, Karen felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen and underwent a series of medical exams before finally undergoing a CT scan on a mass in her chest. Her doctors determined that she had a non-small cell lung cancer that had metastasized to other parts of her body. Although the prognosis was grim, she is staying positive as she undergoes chemotherapy treatment. The process has been challenging, including one instance of her lung being entirely collapsed due to a liquid build-up in her chest, but she is trying to spend as much time as possible with her loved ones as she continues her battle.

Her family would appreciate any help you can provide at this time. Her husband, Steven, is the full-time caretaker and had to take a leave of absence from his job in order to care for Karen. Max is the full-time storyteller and is trying to keep the spirits of his mother high by telling her about his many adventures.

We know this news is not easy to hear - and neither is asking for help - but we would really appreciate any help you can provide as Karen continues to fight. We are not giving up and we appreciate you being here for us in our time of need. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
