This fundraiser is for our sweet mother, Karen Izak.
On Christmas Day, 2019, she was admitted to the hospital for the first time. She was very disoriented and wasn't able to form sentences properly. We soon found out that she had a hemorrhagic stroke, which was caused by a cavernous malformation in her brain. A cavernoma is a cluster of abnormal blood vessels, usually found in the brain and spinal cord. At first, it seemed like she was on her way to recovery. She was going through speech, occupational, and physical therapy. The doctors told us that if her cavernoma bled a second time, there was a possibility for brain surgery. 10 days later, her brain bled again. The chances of this happening were between 4-25%. This set back her recovery and her health declined dramatically. She began having seizures daily, which we had to control with numerous medications. Her body is very sensitive to medications, and has been experiencing many negative side effects. Finding the right medication took some time to get right. During this time, we learned that her brain bled a third time. This has all taken place over the span of 3 months. At this point, surgery is now our top priority. The top neurosurgeon in Hawaii has referred our mother to Stanford Medical Center in California where there are neurosurgeons who specialize in removing cavernomas in the eloquent area of the brain. At this time, we are waiting to hear back from Stanford on when her surgery might take place. This is an extremely stressful time to be figuring this all out during a global pandemic. Her health has continued to decline everyday.
In the past 3 months she has spent most of her time in the hospital. We have accrued many medical bills which have totaled upwards of $25,000, with more bills to come. Our family is not one to ask for much, but many people have asked how they can help. The only way we know right now would be to donate. This would help us in paying for all her previous & future medical bills, transportation to and from California, and her long recovery process.
Even if you are not able to donate, sending love and light to our mother means the world to us. She needs all the positivity and support she can get right now. We love and adore her and are full of faith that she has the ability to heal and recover from this situation.
