Kari’s Transplant Journey

In April 2022, Kari went in for routine blood work with no signs or symptoms of any illness. When the results were abnormal, her doctor ordered a kidney ultrasound and referred to a nephrologist. She had a kidney biopsy which confirmed her autoimmune disease: IgA Nephropathy; a disease that attacks the kidneys. Her nephrologist tried steroid treatment with no success. She was then referred to a second nephrologist in Atlanta who wanted to try chemotherapy. After month 4, her kidney function had already dropped from 28% to 4%. Unfortunately, this meant she had to start dialysis. She was sent to a third nephrologist and started peritoneal dialysis on November 28, 2022.

After spending the entire year of 2023 on dialysis each night, Kari got the call that she is FINALLY GETTING A KIDNEY! Because someone very special to her donated her kidney on Kari's behalf, the paired exchange voucher program has arranged for Kari to have surgery and receive her kidney on January 17.. just one week after her 29th birthday! This is the best birthday present she could have asked for!

With that being said, there is a long road ahead. Kari will have surgery in Atlanta and will have to stay in the Atlanta area for 3-4 weeks following surgery. She would like to be close by should complications arise, in addition to the many follow up appointments she will have in the weeks that follow. Kari will be out of work, but will be responsible for living expenses in both areas, food, gas and the medical bills that will continue to add up.
