Karing for Kayne

In the early hours of December 6, 2018 our beloved friend, sister, and community member Emma Caudy unexpectedly lost the love of her life, her husband Jeff Gregerson to the devastating clutches of Type 1 Diabetes. As many are aware, this tragic event cast a heartbreaking veil over the colorful community that adored and cherished “El Jefe” and it was difficult, especially for Emma, to imagine carrying on with the daily lives we’ve been blessed with. Of course, we watched her do just so with grace and positivity…in true Emma-fashion.
Jeff and Emma have two dogs, ‘Mookie’ (American Bulldog, 12 years) and ‘Kayne’ (American Bulldog-Pitbull mix, 5 years) who undoubtedly have been their pride and joy. Kayne was adopted into their family three years ago and it was clear that there was a spot in Jeff and Emma’s hearts that he was born to fill. Although mischievous (an understatement, to say the least), his boisterous, humorous and jovial demeanor took over their household and everyone’s hearts who met him…especially Jeff’s. It became incredibly clear that the two of them were chums, buddies, two-peas-in-a-pod, and ultimately made for each other.
For anyone who has experienced the immeasurable adoration of a canine friend, it is unfortunately quite fathomable to imagine the heartbreak that goes along with the aging and ultimate loss of a beloved dog. Now…begin to imagine how many pieces of one’s heart would need to be picked up and reassembled if the loss of a soulmate or spouse was followed by the tragic and sudden demise of one’s cherished pup. After the sudden loss of Jeff, young Kayne’s appetite began to decrease noticeably and his demeanor changed from excitable and cheery to lethargic and depressed.
Late last week, Kayne began to vomit black material uncontrollably and Emma rushed him to the animal hospital. There it was determined that his liver is radically failing: the initial test was so off the charts the veterinarians could barely get a reading of his levels, his temperature was drastically over the normal range for a dog, and he was very dehydrated. Kayne will remain at the animal hospital until Friday, January 25, 2019 while they watch his vitals and keep him on an IV and intense liver medication in order to attempt to remedy his exponentially failing liver. Being in the best care possible and only 5 years old, we are all hoping Kayne powers through this difficult time and comes back tougher and more energized than ever! But the bills keep coming, regardless of his hopeful recovery. It wasn’t more than a month prior that Mookie, his canine sister, was also at the vet for unexpected health complications…all around the time that Emma was navigating and organizing her husband’s funeral arrangements and associated expenses.
Donations for this nerve-wracking cause would go towards assisting Emma with paying for the current and growing veterinarian’s bills of Kayne’s liver recovery as well as the hefty bill from Mookie’s previous visit. The dogs are well taken care of at Animal Care Center in Hudson, Wisconsin where many family and friends also trustingly bring their fur-babies as well. We all have a difficult time imagining the possible loss of our beloved four-legged companion, but to imagine going through grief of a loved one simultaneously and still manage daily life and associated expenses makes the heart heavy with the thought. We all see Kayne as a clear extension of Jeff’s comedic and methodical personality…in canine form.
“Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, and filling an emptiness we never knew we had.” Kayne filled that for Jeff and Emma, and filled it even deeper when Jeff left this earth. Please consider any donation, big or small, as it will go towards an easier transition for our dear Emma and Kayne’s hopeful recovery. Kayne's medical bills will be paid upon his pickup on Friday, January 25, 2019 so the need unfortunately is more urgent than expected. Any amount of generosity is immensely appreciated by our humble friend and millions of ‘thank you’s’ will forever be expressed!
