At 5 am on 9 August 2023, a fire ripped through LaHaina, Hawaii. The whole town went up in flames, including the apartments both my mother and sister lived in. Every worldly possession they owned was taken by the inferno.
They need some help.
My mom, Karla, has been a waitress her whole life. We never had much growing up, but that never stopped her from opening our house (and kitchen!) to anyone who needed a place to lie down or a hot meal. She will give you the clothes off her back, all at the low cost of talking your ear off.
My sister, Danielle, hasn't had a charmed life either. She currently works multiple jobs catering and as a pastry chef to make ends meet, and proudly is 3 years sober from alcohol. She's overcome her own struggles to get where she's at now, but you wouldn't guess it with her "hyper chihuahua on espresso" vibe.
They're silently hard workers who just put their heads down, grind away and would never ask for help themselves. So, as their family, I'm doing it for them. I'm just looking to get a little help their way. Just something for groceries and basic necessities. The pictures, heirlooms, and chachkies can never be replaced, but I think a community showing a little love and support can help them move forward and start the journey onto the next phase of things.
