Intro: Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters we would like to thank you for your prayers and support thus far. We are creating this fundraiser as a way to help with the recovery phase of our journey. This campaign will contribute to necessary resources for medical / life essentials support such as hospital bills, consults, surgeries, procedures, different types of therapies, transportation, medications, and other consequential life expenses.
The Accident: On May 10th, 2023, Karris and Kayla (her sister) leisurely rode their bikes to grandma's house for a surprise visit. On the way back, they were headed downhill when Kayla heard a loud noise behind her. By the time she stopped to turn around, she saw Karris in the middle of the street with her bike a few yards away. She was found face down, bleeding profusely and confused. No one witnessed how she was flung off the bike. Fortunately, two nice people rushed over to help when they heard the commotion. Her condition started to get worse as she could not recall anything and struggled to stay awake. Eventually, she was admitted to the Marcus Trauma Center at Grady Hospital.
Diagnosis:
A concussion (with double and blurry vision; short-term memory loss)
Facial bone fracture on the right side
Herniated disk (Neck: C3 and C4 )
Broken, shifted and fractured teeth
Oral lacerations (interior and exterior)
Hematoma on her forehead
Abrasions on face, hands, forearms and light abrasions on her knees.
Due to the extent of the damage she currently wears a cervical neck brace for posture, spine alignment and stability. Karris has ongoing symptoms such as glazed vision, double vision, dizziness, headaches, stuttering, memory lapse, brain fog, and slurred speech. In addition, she suffers from constant pain in her neck, lower back, right ankle, right shoulder, knees, left foot towards the back of Achilles, and jaw (pops periodically).
The Journey Thus Far:
Karris spent 5 days at Grady Hospital. After discharge, she’s been taking it day by day mentally and physically. As a consequence of the unfortunate accident, Karris requires visits with an Optometrist Orthopedic, Orthodontic, Oral and Maxillary surgeon specialist, Concussion Specialist and Physical Therapist for consultations and treatment.
“In my current time, I've been slightly enjoying the soft life, making myself homemade applesauce, blended meats with countless amounts of sweet potatoes and mashed veggies yum! My new hobbies are coloring, and daily walks.” - Karris
Concussion Consultation - Confirmed concussion/failed cognitive test - Positive note: memory has improved (she remembers her husband and most of their relationship experiences up until now)
Ortho Consult - received referrals for a specialized consult and physical therapy
Dental Exam/ Consult - oral 3D X Rays -confirmed more damage and the need for surgery
Oral and Maxillary surgeon Consult - referred by Dentist - More 3D Rays
Visual Exam/ Consult - Vision failed to focus - Neurolens Prescribed
Karris’s recovery is expected to take more than a year, during which unanticipated expenses relating to her medical care may arise. The expenses continue to grow as the results of tests and consultations come in.
A little bit about us:
Allow me to Introduce myself and Karris if you don't already know us. My name is Widlin, We started dating on April 25, 2015, and we decided to get married in the middle of Covd April 2020 on our 5-year dating anniversary! crazy right? Karris is a practicing birth doula, newborn care specialist, and nanny and has a baby gear rental business. She was focused on starting nursing school in September 2023.
I am a loving, supportive husband. Even though my own Life or death situation is now a chronic blood clot disorder I make sure Karris still knows I love her regardless of what she looks like, sounds like or what the future holds for us every day.
We love going on Bike rides, trying new cuisines, attending plays and exploring art museums. Wanting a family of our own one day, stability and good health is motivation not to give up even with every curveball thrown our direction. We are so thankful to God because this accident could have been much much worse, even fatal. We are so thankful we are both alive and ready to fight and conquer this obstacle. Being in a situation so out of our control only calls for that much more of a reason to ask you to contribute in our time of need.”
